Clayfield College student to represent Australia in New Zealand
Just as Clayfield College student Maddy Thompson looks up to Commonwealth Games silver and bronze medalist Georgia Godwin, the 17 year old from Delta Gymnastics at Kedron has her own fan club.
Within Delta Gymnastics where she trains, Thompson has a shoe box full of messages from admiring youngsters within the organisation.
“I know Maddy looks up to Georgia but she also has her own fan base out there with the little ones,” said Delta Communications Manager, Rebecca Hall.
Thompson will represent the Australian Level 10 team at the New Zealand titles next month.
She said she had gradually improved but in the last 12 months she had become stronger and even more confident in her ability entering the championships.
She was also mentally stronger, evidenced by a desire to make the Australian team again after her broken foot mishap in 2017.
“Maddy has got an incredible mindset,” Hall said. “You can see her just switch on. She knows what she is going to do, how she is going to do it. It is very impressive to watch.”
Thompson was introduced to gymnastics aged 7 by her parents after bouncing off the walls as a child.
“I used to climb walls and jump on things and mum said she had to get me into something (active) to burn off my energy,” said the Wavell Heights resident.
