Committee News - March 2019

The extreme heat and rain we have had this summer has presented some challenges to our gymnastics facility at Barron Valley. With a couple of major heat events during summer we received parent feedback wanting to improve cooling to the facility. The facility is designed for natural cooling and over the years significant investment has been made into large fans, insulation and heat repellent paint. To further help ease future heat conditions we have agreed to invest into some more focused smaller fans on the floor and balcony areas. These will be installed over the next month and we continue to explore other enhancements. For the first time in memory our foam pit sprung a leak during the heavy rain. We have pumped out as much water as we can and some foam at the very bottom is a bit damp. During the quieter gym periods in April we're planning a foam pit empty to allow for the foam to air out and to give the pit a good clean. WHS Qld and Dengue Action Task Team have been consulted and are happy with our plan of action. Along with a lot of other Cairns residences and buildings, we had a mould issue on a wall in the gym. This has now been cleaned and repainted. Aside from the weather we have also moved the floor to allow for a clearer vault run and at the same time, have replaced some broken boards.
Thank you to the following members and staff for their time on the above:
Brendan Sheriff of Sheriff Contractors -fans, pit water pumping and floor work Kylie and Adam Gowlett- cleaning and painting mouldy walls Andrew Merchant, John "Brooksy" Brooks and Bede Campbell for floor work We're looking forward to another awesome year and seeing many of you at the upcoming Annual General Meeting. Thanks for your support, The Barron Valley Gymnastics Club Committee
