Samuel Stead is one of our senior MAG gymnasts currently training at Barron Valley Gymnastics. Sam has been involved in gymnastics since a tiny 3 year old and has been training at Barron Valley for 10 years. He is currently the highest level gymnast based in Cairns in a MAG (Mens Artistic Gymnastics) Program.
Currently in year 11 at school, Sam juggles his schooling with 20 hours of gymnastics each week and coaching the next generation of BV gymnasts. Being so involved in the sport he loves has taught Sam many things, not just skill wise – swinging, tumbling and balancing, but time management, goal setting and working hard to reach those goals.
Sam is a great role model for the younger boys (and girls) he both trains with and coaches and loves being able to share his knowledge to help the gymnasts he coaches improve and in turn, be the best they can be.
As a young boy, Sam dreamed of being an Olympian and aspires to compete at an International Level in the sport he loves. In 2018 Sam represented QLD in level 9 at the Australian Gymnastics Championships and was the 2nd in the State on Vault, his favourite apparatus. Next year, Sam is aiming to complete level 10, the highest national level of gymnastics in Australia in pursuit of his goals.
When asked what he loves most about gymnastics, Sam said, “I enjoy the thrill of doing something (which seems) insane to the average person.”
Sam has achieved some fantastic results over the years as a competitive gymnast, including Level 8 State Vault Champion (2016) and 2nd Vault in Level 9. He has also been Regional Champion and has represented QLD at Nationals.
Sam is currently coached by Sergei Hubski, our BV senior MAG/WAG Coach. He attributes his success and love of the sport to some of the wonderful coaches he has had over the years at Barron Valley and is thankful for the inspiration they have provided.
We wish Sam all the very best in completing Level 10 and know he will continue to work hard and smash the goals he sets for himself. Sam, you’re an inspiration!
